Jim O’Brien is a Human Resource Management professional with experience designing, developing, and directing compensation programs; facilitating employee opinion surveys; and managing employee retention and executive career development programs.

Jim enjoyed a successful, 30-year career with IBM Corporation where he managed HR programs on compensation, succession and resource planning, international assignments, redeployment, and resizing. He created the metrics for a human resources measurement system, and oversaw the management training and program implementation for activities affecting 7800 employees located in a geographic region.

As Senior Human Resources Manager with a global telecommunications company, Jim managed all corporate compensation and executive career development programs and was instrumental in designing, developing, and implementing a global “Flagship Development Program” to identify promising junior level executives.

Jim also served as Executive Director of Compensation for a high technology federal government contractor. In addition to redesigning the corporate compensation system to enhance staffing programs and meet employee retention goals, his team classified more than 4100 employees from 19 separate corporate acquisitions into the appropriate jobs and salary grades. Jim managed a project team that designed a successful, corporate-wide employee career development program and regularly provided counsel to senior leadership on issues pertaining to salary administration, internal salary equity, market pricing, and government compliance.

A frequent speaker on performance management and compensation programs, Jim served as a member of the William M. Mercer, Inc. Compensation Steering Committee. He is a national member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Jim currently is a Human Resources Management Consultant.

He holds a Master of Science degree in Human Resource Management from The American University.
